French Market - 1939 A fire in 1788 burned most of the populated area of the city. As a result of the fire, sheds were built near the levee for merchants to display and sell their fish and fresh produce, thus beginning the market known as the French Market. Still in operation today, fruits and vegetables from all over the world can be found here. It is virtually unchanged since Fonville took this stunning photograph. |
